What makes a beard oil bad?

The Composition of a Bad Beard Oil and a Bad Beard Soap

Beard oil and beard soap are two essential products for any man who wants to keep his beard healthy, soft, and shiny. However, not all beard products are created equal. Some of them may contain harmful ingredients that can damage your beard and skin, or simply not work as intended. In this article, we will explore the composition of a bad beard oil and a bad beard soap, and how to avoid them.

What Makes a Bad Beard Oil?

Beard oil is a blend of carrier oils and essential oils that moisturize, nourish, and condition your beard and the skin underneath. A good beard oil should have natural, organic, and high-quality ingredients that suit your beard type and preferences. A bad beard oil, on the other hand, may have some of the following characteristics:

  • It contains synthetic or artificial ingredients, such as mineral oil, silicone, parabens, sulfates, or alcohol. These can clog your pores, dry out your skin, cause irritation, or even trigger allergic reactions.
  • It has a strong or unpleasant scent that clashes with your cologne or natural body odor. Some essential oils may also be too harsh or overpowering for your skin or nose.
  • It is too greasy or heavy for your beard. It may make your beard look oily, weigh it down, or attract dirt and dust. It may also not absorb well into your skin or hair follicles, leaving a residue behind.
  • It is too watery or thin for your beard. It may not provide enough hydration or protection for your beard, especially in dry or cold weather. It may also evaporate quickly or drip off your face.
  • It has a short shelf life or goes rancid easily. This can happen if the oil is exposed to heat, light, air, or moisture. It can affect the quality and effectiveness of the oil, as well as its smell and appearance.

What Makes a Bad Beard Soap?

Beard soap is a cleansing product that removes dirt, oil, and bacteria from your beard and skin. A good beard soap should have gentle, natural, and moisturizing ingredients that cleanse without stripping away your natural oils or disrupting your skin’s pH balance. A bad beard soap, on the other hand, may have some of the following characteristics:

  • It contains harsh chemicals or detergents, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), triclosan, or formaldehyde. These can dry out your skin and hair, cause irritation, inflammation, or infection, or even damage your hair follicles.
  • It has a high pH level that is too alkaline for your skin. This can disrupt your skin’s acid mantle, which is a protective layer that keeps your skin healthy and balanced. A high pH level can also make your hair brittle and prone to breakage.
  • It is too abrasive or exfoliating for your skin. Some soaps may contain coarse particles or beads that can scratch your skin or cause micro-tears. This can lead to redness, sensitivity, or scarring.
  • It does not lather well or rinse off easily. This can make it hard to wash off all the dirt and oil from your beard and skin. It can also leave a film or residue behind that can clog your pores or make your beard dull.
  • It has low quality or expired ingredients that can spoil or lose their potency over time. This can affect the performance and safety of the soap, as well as its smell and color.

How to Avoid Bad Beard Products?

The best way to avoid bad beard products is to do your research before buying them. Read the labels carefully and look for natural and high-quality ingredients that are suitable for your beard type and preferences. Avoid products that contain synthetic, artificial, or harmful ingredients that can damage your beard and skin. Also check the expiration date and storage instructions of the products to ensure their freshness and effectiveness.

After using the ELB oil for 2 weeks, the beard definitely feels softer, easier to tame and the scent lasts for hours! It's a bit intense at first but it oxidises fairly quickly leaving fresh and pleasant fragrance. 10/10

Long story short: these guys stopped me in the streets and asked if I wanted to try their beard oils: all-natural they said, with fenugreek oil and stuff... well I can't do without ever since
